PBS, PLA: Who Has More Development Potential. Will PBS Replace The PLA

Compared with PLA, PBS has superior toughness and temperature resistance, and the synthesis method is simple.  The softening point of PBS is as high as 101℃, while that of PLA is as low as 58℃.

PBS can be used in the temperature range of -30~100℃, which can be applied in the boiling water environment. However, due to the limitation of the softening point, the application field of PLA is restricted to some extent.

PBS has very excellent machining performance and is easier to process than PLA.  The difference of processing performance is one of the biggest differences between PLA and PBS. PBS can be directly popularized on the current common polyolefin processing equipment, and is suitable for injection molding, extrusion, plastic suction and other conventional and special processing methods.  According to the current technology, the PBS blister process is done more, but the injection process still needs a breakthrough.

PLA processing conditions are harsh, poor adaptability, not only need modification and harsh processing environment (dry environment), but also need specially modified processing equipment.

The natural degradation efficiency of bamboo powder /PLA biodegradable composite material in soil is relatively low. In order to realize the efficient degradation of bamboo powder /PLA biodegradable composite material, certain technical measures should be taken, such as the targeted bioefficient degradation of cultivated fungi, bacteria or microbial flora system, etc.

The use of bamboo powder or starch for blending modification is beneficial to increase biodegradation rate of PBS.  The degradation rate of PBS/ bamboo powder composites was significantly higher than that of unmodified PBS, except for the PBS/ bamboo powder composites with coupling agent.

Compared with PLA, PBS is the preferred biodegradable material without considering the price.  However, taking all things into consideration, do you think PBS can break through the price constraint and fully replace the PLA?
