Ministry Of Industry And Information Technology: China's PGA Biodegradable Plastics Industry Is Poised For Development!

China's polyglycolic acid (PGA) biodegradable plastics industry is speeding up, the Ministry of Industry and Information Technology (MIIT) said recently. With the promotion of the "plastic limit", biodegradable plastic alternatives are expected to be in the spotlight.

In recent years, polyglycolic acid (PGA), aliphatic polyester (PCL) and other new petroleum degradable plastics have become a new field for developed countries such as Japan and the United States. Among them, PGA products have good application prospects in medical sutures, tissue repair and other fields due to their good gas barrier, biocompatibility and degradability. n China, due to high technical barriers, small market scale and other factors, PGA industrialization has been stalled in the past few years.

Glycolic acid is the main synthetic raw material of biodegradable polyglycolic acid (PGA). The traditional production process of glycolic acid is acid hydrolysis of hydroxyacetonitrile, which has high toxicity and high cost. Other processes cannot be produced on a large scale because of their unsursurable disadvantages. With the breakthrough of the technology of producing ethylene glycol from coal in China, the large-scale production of PGA by dimethyl oxalate (DMO) has become a feasible process route, and the industrialization of PGA has been on the way.

In addition, according to the Global and China Poly Glycolic Acid Industry Research Report 2020, the global demand for PGA increased from 3,691 tons to 4,645 tons during 2017-2019, with a compound growth rate of more than 10%.According to the status quo and future development trend of China's polyglycolic acid market from 2020 to 2026, the total value of the global polyglycolic acid market reached 7.1 billion yuan in 2019, which is expected to grow to 10.2 billion yuan in 2026, with a compound annual growth rate (CAGR) of 5.3%.The demand for PGA is growing rapidly and the industrialization is ready to take off.
