The Price Of Plastic Bags Rise To £10 In The UK

Under plans unveiled by Environment Secretary Gove, the price of plastic shopping bags in shops across England would rise from 5p to 10p each and all shops, big or small, would be charged.Smaller retailers in England, which use an estimated 3.6bn single-use bags a year, are currently exempt from the charge.　　

The 10p charge is just one of the options for the new proposals, which are part of the UK government's plan to reduce plastic and are due to come into force in early 2020 after being approved.

In addition, the education secretary called on primary and secondary schools across the country to reduce unnecessary plastic and replace plastic straws, bottles and food packaging with other products by 2022.

From 2015, all retailers in England with up to 250 employees will be required to charge for single-use plastic shopping bags.It is estimated that the charge has reduced the use of plastic bags in England by around 15bn.The fees collected by the business are donated to charity.The environment ministry estimates that businesses donated £51 million in 2017-18.At present, all retailers in Scotland, Wales and Northern Ireland, large and small, charge for plastic shopping bags.
