What's the difference between biodegradable & compostable?

With more and more attention on green packaging products and solutions, compostable and biodegradable become the two hottest words. While what does they mean? what's the difference between them?

when a packaging product is biodegradable it means the product will be naturally break down into materials to their component parts. while in fact most of things are biodegradable if give it enough time like decades or even centuries.

Compostable are similar to biodegradable since it goes one more step by providing the earth with nutrients once the material has completely broken down. Compostable means it can biodegradable under specific conditions ( certain temperature, humidity such as the European standard on industrial composting EN13432 )

The primary difference between compostable and biodegradable is that compostable products require a specific environment in order to break down while biodegradable products break down naturally. Certainly composting is a faster process under the right condition.
